Additional Info and FAQs for Spring 2023 Season

Additional Information and New Player FAQs for Spring 2023

TEAM ASSIGNMENTS: NEW for Spring 2023, all team assignments will be determined by school grade (not age). This is to align with both league play and other programs we may self-schedule games with (supplemental games or games for teams not participating in league play). Players will be assigned to teams in the following school grade ranges: 2/3, 4/5, Middle School Junior (6/7), and Middle School Senior (7/8). NOTE: We do accept registrations for players in grades K-8, but at the moment our youngest team is 2/3 grade (if you have a kindergartner or 1st grader, he/she will practice and play with 2nd and 3rd graders). In the event we have 10 or more boys or girls register for a K/1 team, we will separate this group into its own team (there are competition options for this age group).

ROSTER MINIMUMS AND COMPETITION OPTIONS: Also NEW for Spring 2023, our teams will have the option to compete in league play (our games will be scheduled by a regional lacrosse league) or to self-schedule games (HYL schedules games with regional programs that match up well with the collective size and experience levels of our teams).

What Are The Roster Requirements? For either option, we need to have enough players to field a team for competition and require a minimum of 10 players for boys or girls 2/3 grade teams (these teams play 7v7 lacrosse and teams need additional players for substitutions or to still be able to play if a couple of players aren’t available for a game).

For all other boys teams, the minimum roster requirement is 13 players (boys play 10v10).

For all other girls teams, the minimum roster requirement is 15 players (girls play 12v12).

Once we meet the roster requirements for each team, coaches will decide whether to register the team for league play (slightly more competitive) or to self-schedule games – based on the experience level of the team. This is primarily to provide a fun, positive experience for everyone involved. We will provide more details on how and why these decisions are made once the season begins.

As one final note, if we fail to meet the roster minimum for any age group for our boys or girls teams, we will provide alternative options. These options would likely include the option for your player to “play up” on a team that has met the roster requirements, to participate in an alternative “Skills Development” program that still provides the same lacrosse instruction and the possibility of reduced roster competition (e.g. 5v5 or 7v7) at a reduced registration fee (partial refund), or to withdraw your registration and receive a full refund.

We hope we will meet the roster requirements for each team. You can help by sharing information with other families and friends in our area who may want to try lacrosse as well!

Who Do We Play Against? All teams play opponents throughout the Metro Atlanta Region (we travel for most games). In recent seasons, our teams have played relatively nearby teams in Decatur and Peachtree City, but have also played opponents in North Paulding and Marietta. We do try to schedule home games (more-likely for teams that self-schedule).

When Are Games? Games are typically on Saturday mornings – but can also be on Saturday or Sunday afternoon depending on the availability of fields and officials. It’s common for our teams to play double-headers (two games) when we travel.

Teams competing in league play will receive a complete game schedule early in the season. Teams that self-schedule games may only have a partial schedule in February – but we do make every effort to schedule games in a timely manner.

When and Where Are Practices? Boys practice on Sundays from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Tuesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Girls will either practice on Mondays/Thursdays or Wednesdays/Fridays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (depending on team, field and coach availability). We will finalize the girls practice schedule before January 2023.

What Do We Need for Equipment? Please wait to purchase equipment until after you have registered and have heard from your team’s coach. Coaches will advise you on the best way to equip your player, including the programs we offer to help reduce the costs of equipping your player. That said, all players are required to be fully-equipped and this equipment varies for boys and girls. Boys are required to have a boys lacrosse stick, helmet, mouthguard, pads, athletic cup, and cleats (lacrosse, football, or soccer cleats). Girls are required to have a girls lacrosse stick, goggles (most-common) or a girls lacrosse helmet (less-common), and cleats (lacrosse or soccer cleats).

We try to reduce costs where we can and have several programs to help with equipment. First, we collect used equipment donations from existing or past players. If we have used equipment available, we provide this for free to players. HYL also purchases discounted equipment throughout the year for our “Gear Bank” – we look for deals that are at least 50% off and pre-purchase equipment. If we have discounted equipment, we sell this to parents “at cost” during our pre-season “Yard Sale.” If we are unable to provide used or discounted equipment, we also have negotiated discounts with retailers and also provide parents with guidance on what to buy and where to get the best price. Your coaches will provide more information after registration closes.

How Much Does This Cost? Registration for the boys and girls teams is $185 for the Spring 2023 season. Players that register before January 2023 qualify for a $30 “Early Bird” discount. Use promo code EARLYBIRD during registration for your discount. Player fees cover all team and practice-related costs (including all supplies – like balls, cones, paints, and field equipment, league fees or officials fees, field rental fees, etc.).

Player fees do NOT cover player equipment (as mentioned above) or player uniforms. Returning players do not need to purchase new uniforms unless they no longer fit (we do have a limited inventory of uniforms for possible “size swaps” for returning players). NEW player uniforms are $65. You will have the option to order a uniform during registration, but will not pay for the uniform until they arrive. All players are required to have a USA Lacrosse Membership. This is an annual cost of $30 – good for one year. If you register for summer camp or our Fall 2023 season, you will not need to pay this fee again. You will have the option to purchase or renew your USA Lacrosse Membership as part of registration (our registration system is integrated with USA Lacrosse).
