Henry Youth Lacrosse (HYL) is the official youth lacrosse association in Henry County. HYL offers both Fall and Spring lacrosse programs for boys and girls in grades K-8th. HYL also hosts a Youth Lacrosse Summer Camp in June - and FREE Lacrosse Clinics throughout the year for new and beginner players to try lacrosse without having to join a team or purchase equipment. HYL also organizes regular pickup lacrosse games for players of all ages (from elementary school to adult). Please visit our Pickup Games page for more info.
Please join our email list if you would like to be notified when registration opens up for any of our programs. We have included additional information for our current programs below (with links to registration). If you need additional information or have any questions, please contact Jeremy Porter at 404.641.9023 or jeremy@henryyouthlax.org.
BIG NEWS! Henry Youth Lacrosse will offer a LOCAL box lacrosse option this winter at Avalon Park in McDonough.
While we plan to organize league play for future seasons, we will organize weekly “pickup games” for each age group on Saturdays in December and January. And we may start as soon as November 30th if we have enough players signed up by then.
Registration is $50 “all you can play” for the season. Each group will have the opportunity to play in a minimum of 7 games. In addition to the regularly scheduled Saturday games, each group will be assigned a coordinator from HYL who will work with the group to schedule additional rink time (either on Sunday afternoons or weeknights – as the facility is available and lighted). Your registration covers any/all activities your group may schedule during the season. We hope to organize additional games, as well as open practices and box lacrosse-specific clinics throughout December and January.
We will finalize “rink time” (game time) assignments leading up to November 30th based on the number of players registered at that point. Please register ASAP if you would like to participate in box lacrosse this winter. Space is limited for each group to ensure all players in each group will get adequate playing time each week. You can register via our registration page here. A USA Lacrosse Membership is required for all participants and is part of the registration process. All proceeds from this program will go directly towards improving our new box lacrosse program.
Formats/Groups
Like other pickup games we organize, we will divide players in each group into separate teams and play a game each Saturday. Middle School, High School and Adult groups will play 6v6 (5v5 +goalie). Elementary School groups will play either 6v6, 5v5 or 4v4 depending on numbers (playing area will be adjusted based on numbers).
We are currently registering players in the following age groups:
Some players may be able to play-up/down depending on registration numbers. For example, 8th graders may also play in the HS group or 3rd graders may play down with the K-2nd group if there is a need for players any given week. Groups may also be split or combined based on demand (number of registrations we receive). We will share additional details once we have a better idea of how many players will be participating this winter.
Sample Schedule
While this schedule will likely change based on registrations, here is a sample of how the schedule could look for Saturdays this winter:
We will adjust schedule as necessary to acommodate all players/groups that register. This schedule is provided as a sample. If the final schedule does not work for players/families after registration closes, we will either make adjustments or refund registration.
Equipment
Players may play box lacrosse with their existing Field Lacrosse equipment with two exceptions: no boys/mens defense sticks (long poles) are allowed (only short sticks) and players must wear non-marking tennis shoes/sneakers (no cleats allowed). Any shoes a player would wear for basketball or P.E. class are fine (the hockey surface is a hard plastic-type material used for roller hockey). Goalies may play with their existing Field Lacrosse equipment. We will plan to invest in box lacrosse goalie equipment for future seasons.
If you have questions or would like additional information prior to registering, please contact Jeremy Porter at 404.641.9023 or jeremy@henryyouthlax.org.
About Box Lacrosse
If you’re not familiar with box lacrosse (also known as indoor lacrosse), this version of lacrosse is played “indoors” on a hockey rink (or in our case, an inline hockey rink). The game is played at a faster pace and challenges players to make quicker decisions on offense and defense with less space to operate. It’s a great option for players looking to improve their Field Lacrosse skills ahead of the spring season. Here’s a sample of what box lacrosse looks like – at least for 8 year olds.
Box lacrosse is also what The Georgia Swarm plays (at the professional level). Here are some highlights from The Georgia Swarm.
While there is a fully-equipped version of box lacrosse for girls/women, we are starting with normal “Field Lacrosse” played indoors this winter. We think this is a great opportunity for our local girls/womens lacrosse players to have an opportunity to compete locally during the winter months. Here is an example of what that might look like (except we don’t have artificial turf at our facility).
We hope you'll consider joining us for our first-ever box lacrosse season in Henry County! We look forward to getting things started this winter.
